Made in USA vs. Made in China Paddles | Authorized Dealer Explains How Much Paddle Quality Varies by Country of Manufacture
"With the same specs, why is there such a difference in paddle prices?" This is one of the common questions we hear from customers. Looking at product pages, paddles with the same "Raw Carbon x 14mm core" have a price difference ranging from the upper 10,000 yen range to over 30,000 yen, depending on the brand.
One of thereasons for this price difference is the country of manufacture. I (Coach Yoshi), who has play-tested over 100 paddles, will explain the difference between Made in USA and Made in China without bias. As the sole authorized distributor of Engage Pickleball in Japan, I will also honestly share the quality differences I've observed in the field.
Pickleball Industry Manufacturing Map
In the global market for pickleball paddles, manufacturing countries are broadly divided into three categories:
| Country of Manufacture | Main Brands/Models | Price Range (Relative Level) |
|---|---|---|
| United States (Made in USA) | Engage Pickleball (US assembly and quality control) | Mid to high price range |
| Australia / Global | Six Zero | High price range |
| China (OEM, mass production) | Many mid-tier and emerging brands | Entry to mid price range |
Among these,Engage Pickleball occupies a unique position—while many major manufacturers have shifted to production in Chinese factories, Engage continues itsMade in USA system, assembling and quality-controlling in the US while sourcing materials and parts globally.
💡 Coach Yoshi's Point
While "Made in USA" might seem like it's for "branding purposes" at first glance, in Engage's case, it also haspractical benefits. By sourcing materials and parts globally butconsistently assembling and quality-controlling in the US, batch-to-batch variations are minimized—this is a clear difference I feel from my experience of play-testing over 100 paddles.
Where Quality Differences Arise by Country of Manufacture
It's not a simple equation of "Made in China = poor quality" or "Made in USA = high quality."The reality boils down to differences in design, management, and inspection systems.

1. Batch-to-Batch Variation
Buying two paddles of the same model and finding they feel different isnot uncommon in the pickleball industry. This tends to happen more with mass-produced paddles from Chinese OEMs and less with manufacturers that emphasize US assembly and quality control.
Why? In a US assembly system: - Assembly lines are managed with limited scope - Quality inspection standards are consistent within the company - The cycle for detecting and correcting defects is fast
In Chinese OEM outsourcing: - Factories, lines, and workers are dispersed across multiple locations - Material batches are selected by the outsourcing partner (often to reduce costs) - The brand's quality standards may not be fully permeated to the outsourcing partner
One reason why tour pros can confidently replace their paddles is thisminimal individual variation.
2. Differences in Material Grade
Carbon fiber, honeycomb material, edge guard material—even if they are all the same "type," their performance can vary significantly depending on the grade. For example, carbon fiber has different grades, with higher grades offering greater tensile strength.
Manufacturers thatretain control over material selectiontend to adopt higher grades. Chinese OEMs often use thelowest grade that meets specsto manage costs (though this varies by manufacturer).
3. Strictness of Inspection Systems
USAP (USA Pickleball) certification standards include limits on surface roughness (Rz / Rt). US-assembled manufacturers often conduct100% inspection or frequent sampling inspections, ensuring that products meet standards at the time of shipment. In OEM, thefrequency of sampling inspections may be lower, leading to potential individual variations even after USAP certification.
4. Responsiveness of After-Sales Support
US-assembled manufacturers have theirmanufacturing base and headquarters close, allowing for a rapid verification and improvement cycle when defects occur. Chinese OEMs have aphysical distance between their manufacturing base and headquarters, which tends to slow down the feedback loop from the market to the manufacturing site.
Where Do Price Differences Come From?
While it's easy to dismiss it as "expensive because it's Made in USA," breaking down the reality reveals the following structure:
| Factors Driving Up Price | US Assembly Situation | Chinese OEM Situation |
|---|---|---|
| Labor Costs | Average manufacturing wage in US ($20-30/hour) | Average manufacturing wage in China ($4-8/hour, varies by region) |
| Material Costs | Often selects higher grades | Lower grades also an option for cost reduction |
| Quality Inspection Costs | 100% or high-frequency inspection | Lower frequency of sampling inspection possible |
| Logistics Costs | Short distance for US consumption, US to Japan by sea freight | China to US or Japan by sea freight |
| Brand Premium | May be added as "Made in USA" appeal | OEM brands can suppress this amount |
As a result, US-assembled flagships are often 1.5 to 3 times the price of Chinese OEM products.Whether this price difference reflects "practical quality differences" or "brand premium"is the consumer's decision point.
💡 Coach Yoshi's Point
In my assessment, for Engage, the practical aspects account for the majority. Even with the same "Raw Carbon x 14mm core" specs, when play-testing the Engage Pursuit Pro1 alongside a Chinese OEM brand, there's a clear difference in thespeed of degradation in feel after prolonged play. It might be hard to notice in a single play-test, but it's a distinct difference I can definitively state from my experience of trying over 100 paddles.
Engage's Made in USA Strategy: A Real-World Example

Engage Pickleball was founded in Oxford, Florida in 2015 and is one of the few major manufacturers that maintains aUS assembly and quality control system. Specific initiatives include:
1. Assembly and Quality Control in the USA
Materials and components are sourced globally from optimal sources, whileassembly and quality inspection are performed in the USA. This setup, with designers close to the final production process, facilitates thorough adherence to quality standards.
2. Adoption of Raw Carbon Fiber
Engage's main models in the Performance / Professional series useRaw Carbon Fiber. For example, the Pursuit Pro1 Elongated is officially described as having "Raw Carbon Fiber with Next Generation Inner Application Layer," pursuing a balance of durability and spin performance.
3. Unified Quality Standards Across All Models
From the entry-level Encore Pro V3.0 to the competitive model X2, all products areshipped with the same quality standards. Even entry-level models deliver "uncompromising finish."
4. Incorporating Feedback from Tour Professionals
Engage contracts with several professional players, includingJessie Irvine(former WTA Tennis - Top 5 in all divisions),Jaime Oncins(former ATP for 15 years),Purav Raja(Grand Slam experience, India Davis Cup),Eric Oncins(former collegiate tennis), andKara Williams(US Open / PPA medalist). Their real-world feedback isdirectly reflected in product development.
Players Who Should Choose Made in USA
We don't recommend Made in USA for everyone. There are clear "pros and cons."
Those for Whom US-Assembled Made in USA is Suitable
- Want touse the same paddle for a long time (concerned about age-related deterioration and individual variations)
- Want toprioritize batch stability for competitive matches
- Want tostock two or more of the same model (feel secure with minimal individual variations)
- Want toprioritize after-sales support (speed of defect verification)
- Value "uncompromising quality"
Those For Whom Chinese OEM is Acceptable
- Cost is the highest priority, and a sufficiently enjoyable level is enough
- Someone whofrequently replaces paddles (individual variations are acceptable)
- Beginner who wants to try it out cheaply first
- Wants to follow industry trend models (Chinese OEMs often have many emerging brands that get attention)
Chinese OEM paddles, when chosen appropriately, can also deliversufficient performance. They are a strong option if you want to balance price and quality.
Inflow of Latest Technologies like "Carbon x Foam Core"
It's important to note here thatthe latest material technologies often spread through Chinese OEMs. For example:
- Raw Carbon facewas pioneered and popularized by Six Zero (Australian-born, global manufacturing)
- Foam coreis also actively adopted by multiple Chinese OEM brands
If you "want to try the latest technology,"Chinese OEMs may offer more options. Made in USA tends to have a moreconservative approach to development, adopting technologies after they have stabilized.
In other words, Made in USA can be characterized by "mature technology with the highest quality," while Chinese OEM is about "latest technology at an affordable price."
My Recommendation: 3 Patterns
Based on my experience of play-testing over 100 paddles, I'll share three patterns from the perspective of manufacturing country.
Pattern A: Prioritizing Stable Quality, Long-Term Use
→ Engage Pickleball (US Assembly and Quality Control)
Features a three-tier upgrade path (Encore Pro V3.0 → Performance → Professional) with minimal individual variation due to US assembly and quality control. A classic choice for those who want to use a paddle for a long time.
Pattern B: Wanting to Try the Latest Technology
→ Six Zero (Australian-born, Global Manufacturing)
Condenses cutting-edge industry technology such as Raw Carbon x G4 Aerospace Solid Foam Core x Power Gel Layer. While not Made in USA, it achieves world-class quality through its unique technological prowess.
Pattern C: Prioritizing Cost, Wanting to Try Casually
→ Chinese OEM Brands
The number of options for "Raw Carbon" specs around the 10,000 yen price point is increasing. However, be aware that there may be batch-to-batch variations when choosing.
Summary
- Differences in country of manufacture affect the "direction" of quality (not simply good or bad)
- Strengths of US assembly: Minimal batch-to-batch variation, selection of higher-grade materials, inspection system, responsiveness of after-sales support
- Strengths of Chinese OEM: Cost efficiency, early adoption of new technologies, wide range of options
- Price differences are typically 1.5 to 3 times. Discern whether the difference is due to "practical quality differences" or "brand premium."
- Engage Pickleball is a rare entity that maintainsUS assembly and quality control amid the prevalence of Chinese manufacturing. It's a strong candidate if you prioritize quality stability.
