DUPR Reliability and Half-Life Explained: Understanding the "Certainty" of Numbers
"Next to the DUPR number, there's a percentage. What is that?" — That's the Reliability Score. To correctly interpret DUPR, the key is to look not only at the rating number but also at this "certainty" together.

What is Reliability?
Reliability is an indicator that shows how accurately the DUPR number reflects one's current skill level. It is displayed as a percentage from 1 to 100%, with a higher percentage indicating a "more reliable number."
The key point is that rating (skill level) and reliability (certainty) are separate things. For example, someone with "4.0 but 20% reliability" likely has a number that hasn't stabilized yet. Conversely, if someone has "4.0 with 90% reliability," that's a fairly solid 4.0.
💡 Coach Yoshi's Tip When checking an opponent's DUPR, look at both the number and the reliability. If an opponent's reliability is low, they might actually be stronger (or weaker) than their number suggests. Reliability is a yardstick to avoid blindly trusting the numbers.
How Does Reliability Increase?

There are three main factors that increase reliability:
- Number of Matches: Increases with more recorded matches.
- Recency: Increases the more recently one has played.
- Connectivity: Increases the more widely one has played against a variety of opponents.
In other words, the more you play "recently, frequently, and against diverse opponents," the more accurate your numbers become. Always playing with the same group is somewhat weak in terms of connectivity. Playing against new opponents and in tournaments can also increase reliability.
Benchmark for "Reliable"
Officially, 60% reliability is considered the "passing" benchmark (DUPR itself explains that "the 60% figure is somewhat arbitrary"). Many clubs and leagues require "60% or higher reliability" for participation.
To reach 60% and further improve it, the official guidance emphasizes the number of matches and opponent diversity (as of writing).
- Aiming for 60%: Roughly playing against 6 or more teams (or 2 or more partners for doubles).
- Improving from 60% to 100%: Roughly playing against 12 or more teams (or 4 or more partners for doubles).
The main takeaway is that "consistently recording matches against a variety of opponents" is more important than the numbers themselves.
What is Half-Life?
Half-life is a mechanism where older matches gradually have less impact. It uses exponential decay, giving more weight to recent matches and less to older ones.
- Recent matches → Heavy weighting (reflects current skill well)
- Older matches → Gradually lighter weighting
This is why DUPR can reflect "current skill" rather than "past performance."
According to the official explanation, half-life is a value that sums up the weighted "number" and "recency" of recent matches. For example, if you record 10 matches today, your half-life will be 10. If you don't play for a month afterward, it will drop to about 9 — that's the idea (official example). A higher value means you've "played a lot recently = data is fresh and abundant."
Conversely, if you take a break from playing, this value will gradually decrease, making your numbers prone to instability. In fact, the official guidance indicates that "a person with 100% reliability will drop to 60% in about 6 months if they don't record matches," and "a person at 60% will drop to 30% in about 3 months."
