Have you been hearing the terms "Raw Carbon" or "ローカーボン" (Raw Carbon) a lot lately? When you search for paddles, these terms invariably pop up, leaving many of you wondering, "What's the actual difference?" As someone who has play-tested over 100 paddles, I'll explain it clearly from a tennis coach's perspective.


What is Raw Carbon?

Fundamentals of Carbon Material

Carbon fiber is a high-performance material originally developed for the aerospace industry. It's also familiar in tennis rackets and golf clubs. Lightweight, high-strength, and excellent at vibration absorption—it possesses ideal properties for sporting goods.

In pickleball paddles, models featuring this carbon material on the "face" (hitting surface) are rapidly increasing. Since the face material significantly influences shot feel and spin performance, it's one of the most crucial points to check when choosing a paddle.

What "Raw" Means

Regular carbon face paddles are polished and painted after manufacturing to achieve a smooth finish. In contrast, Raw Carbon paddles are finished without surface processing, leaving the carbon fiber weave (texture) as is.

The key here is "Raw = untreated state." Visually, you can see the fine mesh pattern of the carbon fiber, and touching it reveals a slightly rough sensation. This roughness comes from a manufacturing process called "Peel-ply texture." In the final stage of carbon laminate molding, a release fabric (peel-ply) is applied to the surface and then peeled off. The pattern of the fabric's weave and the fractured surface of the resin layer are transferred directly—this "peeled-off mark" creates the unique roughness. You can think of it this way: a normal finish polishes this away, while a Raw finish intentionally leaves it.

Pickleball balls (approx. 7.4 cm in diameter; official standard 7.29–7.54 cm hollow plastic balls) have a smooth surface. If the paddle face has roughness, the ball will "grip" for a longer duration at the moment of impact, allowing for more spin.

Tennis players might easily grasp this concept; it's similar to the "bite" sensation where polyester strings generate more spin than natural gut. In technical terms, this is called "Dwell time"—the time the ball remains in contact with the paddle face. Raw Carbon enhances the efficiency of spin energy transfer by extending this dwell time.

  • No sacrifice of power: Being a lightweight and strong material, it also allows for high speeds on flat shots.
  • Stylish appearance: The visible carbon fiber weave design is simply stylish (lol).

Cons and Considerations

  • Spin performance degrades over time: Being in a "raw" state, the surface roughness wears off with use. For those playing several times a week, examples of noticeable performance degradation from initial state have been reported in about 2 months (Pickleball Effect, 2026). However, this varies greatly depending on frequency of use, storage methods, and individual differences, so there's no definite expiration date. A decrease in spin power is a sign it's time for replacement.
  • Slightly higher price: Due to the high-performance material, it tends to be more expensive than entry-level paddles. As of May 2026, the domestic market typically sees prices between 15,000 and 30,000 yen.
  • Be aware of USAP regulations: USA Pickleball (USAP) strictly regulates the roughness of paddle surfaces. Under current standards, if the average Rz value (max 30μm) or Rt value (max 40μm), or any single data point exceeds Rz 33μm / Rt 44μm, certification will be revoked. You may sometimes see "Ra value" mentioned, but USAP's official standards are Rz and Rt, so be careful not to confuse them.

As a solution to this durability issue, next-generation surface technology called "Durable Grit" has emerged. This technology enhances the durability of Raw Carbon while maintaining its spin characteristics through various methods such as resin embedding of grit particles (ceramic, silicon carbide, etc.), spray coating, and addition of protective layers. Be sure to check for this when choosing a paddle.

However, to slow down degradation as much as possible—avoid hitting the ground on the court and use a cover after play. These two points are crucial.

Self-checking for degradation is simple. When you feel that you're no longer generating as much spin with the same swing, lightly run your fingertip across the face. If it feels smooth, it's time for a replacement.

Cases Where Raw Carbon is Not Recommended

To be honest, there are situations where Raw Carbon isn't the best choice. For those who want to save money, prioritize powerful shots over spin, or play primarily with smashes rather than rallies, fiberglass or graphite paddles might offer better cost performance. Spin isn't everything, so choose based on your playstyle.


How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle: Raw Carbon Edition

Check Point ①: Verify Face Material Specification

Check the product page or specifications for terms like "Raw Carbon Face," "Toray T700 Carbon," or "Carbon Fiber Face." While "Graphite" also indicates a carbon-based material, its manufacturing process and surface treatment may differ from Raw Carbon. Always check the full specifications.

Check Point ②: Combination with Core Material

Beyond the face material, the core material significantly impacts the feel. The current mainstream is a polymer honeycomb core. The thickness of the core changes the feel.

  • Thin core (〜13mm): Harder feel, ball bounces well. Suitable for those prioritizing power for drives and smashes.
  • Mid core (14〜15mm): Balanced between power and control. In my experience, this thickness is comfortable for tennis players transitioning to pickleball.
  • Thick core (16mm〜): Softer feel, ball is less prone to wild shots. Good for dink battles at the kitchen and easy for beginners/intermediate players to handle.

Check Point ③: Shape and Weight

The paddle's shape also affects shot characteristics.

  • Traditional shape: Wide sweet spot, reduces errors. Suitable for all-round players.
  • Elongated shape: Increases reach, makes angle shots easier. Popular among tennis players and power players.

Weight commonly ranges from 7.5〜8.5oz (approx. 210〜240g); lighter paddles offer more maneuverability, while heavier ones provide more stability and power.

Check Point ④: Quality Grade of Carbon Fiber

Even among "Raw Carbon" paddles, the durability and spin retention can vary significantly depending on the grade of carbon fiber used. Look for the material specification "Toray T700S."

Toray is a Japanese material manufacturer that produces aerospace-grade carbon fiber used in aircraft bodies. T700S has a tensile strength of approximately 4,900 MPa (official specification value) and is highly regarded for its superior strength and durability compared to general carbon fibers. If "Toray T700S" is listed in the specifications, it serves as an indicator of quality.
