Control-focused vs. Power-focused | A Coach Explains How to Find the Right Paddle Type for You

"What do you mean by 'control paddle'? How is it different from a 'power paddle'?" We often hear people say that they see "Control & Spin" and "Power & Spin" on paddle product pages, but they don't know which one to choose.

In fact, this "control vs. power" is the most important choice that directly relates to your playing style. It's best to decide this first, even before considering materials or brands. I (Coach Yoshi), who has playtested over 100 paddles, will explain the differences between the two types, a diagnostic flow, and recommendations by brand.

Paddles are broadly divided into two "types"

Pickleball paddles are broadly categorized into control-oriented and power-oriented designs from the conceptual stage. Recently, "hybrid-oriented" paddles, which are a middle ground between the two, have increased, but let's start by understanding the basic two types.

What are control-oriented paddles?

These are designed with the highest priority on accurately hitting the ball to a desired spot. Specifically:

  • Thicker core (around 16mm) to prevent the ball from flying out of control
  • Softer feel for delicate touch
  • Larger sweet spot for higher forgiveness even when not hitting the center
  • Excels in dinks, drop shots, and reset shots

What are power-oriented paddles?

These are designed with the highest priority on hitting powerful shots:

  • Thinner core (~14mm) for more pop
  • Direct feel for quick response
  • Slightly smaller sweet spot, but greater power when hitting the center
  • Excels in drives, smashes, and third shot drives

In-depth comparison across 5 axes

Comparison Axis Control-Oriented Power-Oriented
Core Thickness Around 16mm (Thicker) 13–14mm (Thinner)
Feel Soft, high forgiveness Direct, firm
Strong Shots Dinks, drops, resets Drives, smashes
Sweet Spot Larger Slightly smaller
Playing Style Strategic builder One-shot finisher
Representative Models Six Zero Coral 16mm / Engage X2 / Engage Encore Pro V3.0 Six Zero Black Opal 14mm / Engage Pursuit Pro Series 12.7

The key point is that core thickness is the biggest indicator. You can quickly differentiate by remembering that in product specifications, "14mm or less = more power-oriented" and "16mm or more = more control-oriented."

The advent of hybrid paddles: A new trend for 2025–2026

A recent trend is the rapid increase in hybrid-oriented paddles (also known as all-around paddles). These are designed to "balance control and power" and are achieved particularly through shape innovation (e.g., Hybrid Shape) and advancements in core materials.

Examples: - Six Zero Double Black Diamond Control (DBD) — 14mm core that also offers control performance - Six Zero Coral 16mm Hybrid — 16mm core with a Hybrid shape for an all-around model - Engage Pursuit Pro1 Hybrid 12.7 — Hybrid shape with a thinner core, a power-biased balanced model

With the emergence of hybrid paddles, the choice is no longer just "control vs. power," but rather considering "where is the balance point that suits my playing style?"

Playing style diagnosis: 3 questions

Let's diagnose which type of paddle—control, power, or hybrid—suits you best with three questions.

プレースタイルに合うパドルを選ぶ瞬間

Question 1: What are your strongest shots?

Answer Score
A. Dinks/Drop shots (delicate play near the net) Control +2
B. Drives/Smashes (overpowering with strong hits) Power +2
C. Setting up points with long rallies Control +1
D. Want to smash third shot drives Power +1

Question 2: What is your mentality during play?

Answer Score
A. Want to minimize errors / Prioritize consistency Control +2
B. Want to attack and finish / Willing to take risks Power +2
C. Want to switch between styles depending on the situation Hybrid +2

Question 3: What is your playing experience/confidence level?

Answer Score
A. Beginner / Want to solidify fundamentals Control +2
B. Intermediate to advanced / Want to improve offensive power Power +1
C. Intermediate to advanced / Adaptable all-around player Hybrid +1

Diagnosis Result

The type with the highest total score is the paddle type that suits you:

  • Highest total for Control → Choose a 16mm core paddle
  • Highest total for Power → Choose a 13-14mm core paddle
  • Highest total for Hybrid or Scores are balanced → Choose a Hybrid shape paddle

Hybrid-oriented recommendations

For intermediate players (most recommended)

Six Zero Double Black Diamond Control (DBD)
The most popular Six Zero at Pickleball Lab. Despite its 14mm core, it also offers control performance, making it a balanced choice suitable for both control and power players.

For advanced players

Engage Pursuit Pro1 Hybrid 12.7
A hybrid-shaped model from the Performance series. Features Raw T700S Carbon Fiber × MachPro Polymer Core, making it a complete paddle suitable for competitive play.

Common misconception: "Control = weak, Power = strong" is not true

I want to emphasize this: control-oriented paddles are not lacking in power. Advanced players using control paddles frustrate opponents by aiming for precise spots and ultimately finishing the point. Power paddles allow for quick finishes, but shots can be less precise.

Even in professional tours (PPA/APP), top players use both types depending on the situation. The only criterion for judgment is "does it suit my playing style?" There is no superiority or inferiority.

💡 Coach Yoshi's Tip

When I coach young players aspiring to go pro, I recommend starting by solidifying their technique with a control paddle → then, once they are intermediate or advanced, expanding their offensive capabilities with a power paddle. If you jump into a power paddle without a strong foundation, mistakes can become prominent and hinder progress.

Summary

  • Control-oriented: 16mm core, soft feel, suited for dinks & resets, also good for beginners
  • Power-oriented: 13–14mm core, direct feel, suited for drives & smashes, good for intermediate and above
  • Hybrid-oriented: A middle ground between the two, achieved through shape (Hybrid) and core material innovation. Currently a mainstream trend.
  • You can determine your type with 3 questions: "strongest shots," "mentality," and "playing experience."
  • If in doubt, starting with a hybrid paddle (like Six Zero DBD) is a safe choice.

"Control vs. Power" is the most important factor to decide before choosing a brand. Choosing the type that suits your style will visibly accelerate your progress.
