DUPR Verified and the Sandbagging Problem: A Coach Explains How to Prevent Rating Manipulation
"There are people who deliberately pretend to be weaker than they are to win in lower-ranked classes." As the number of tournaments increases, this "sandbagging" becomes more of a problem. How is DUPR tackling this? We'll explain their latest initiative, "DUPR Verified."
I'm Coach Yoshi. I've played tennis for 15 years and discovered pickleball in 2026. I believe fair competition is at the root of sports enjoyment. In this article, I'll explain the sandbagging problem and how DUPR Verified works to prevent it, in the simplest terms possible. If you want to know the basics of DUPR, please refer to What is DUPR?

What is sandbagging? What's the problem?
Sandbagging is when someone deliberately downplays their skill level to enter a lower-ranked class and win easily. For example, if someone is truly a 4.0 player but enters and wins a 3.0 class tournament—that's sandbagging.
What's the problem?
- People who are legitimately in that class cannot win
- It undermines the fairness of the tournament
- It discourages players who are playing honestly
Ratings are a tool for "enjoying the game at a similar level," but sandbagging exploits this. I don't think it's a pleasant situation for the community as a whole either.
Why is DUPR strong against sandbagging?
First, DUPR's numbers are generated based on actual match results, not self-reported claims (Difference between DUPR and self-rating). So, you can't lower your number just by "claiming to be weak."
Furthermore, DUPR structurally prevents sandbagging by restricting entry brackets based on DUPR ratings.
- Example: A "4.0 class" might only allow players with a DUPR of 3.75 to 4.25.
- Eligibility is determined based on DUPR ratings.
- Players outside the range cannot enter that class.
Even if you "pretend to be weak," you cannot enter a lower-ranked class if your rating doesn't meet the criteria. I believe this is the strength of DUPR-based class divisions.
How DUPR Verified works

DUPR Verified is a stricter framework that enhances identity verification and result integrity. In Verified tournaments and accounts:
- Phone number verification and DUPR+ registration ensure identity, preventing impersonation and multiple accounts.
- Entry range checks ensure participation only in appropriate classes.
- Verified matches carry more weight (treated as more reliable results).
In fact, Verified events seem to be handled in a way that their results are weighted more heavily than usual (cases where it's announced that "Verified tournaments have a greater impact on ratings" exist). This means that "results from properly contested matches in a Verified setting" are more accurately reflected in ratings.
💡 Coach Yoshi's Point Verified isn't just about "punishing cheating"; it's also a system that "ensures honest players are fairly evaluated." The more level the playing field, the more enjoyable pickleball becomes.
Adoption trends in 2026
DUPR Verified is gaining widespread adoption in the global pickleball scene.
- Over 300 organizations (including clubs and tours) have applied to host Verified events.
- Major leagues and tours such as The Dink Minor League Pickleball (MiLP), World of Pickleball, Triple Team Pickleball League (TTPL), and National Pickleball have announced Verified adoption for 2026.
- Large clubs (such as The Picklr) are also implementing it.
How DUPR is used in professional settings is covered in MLP and DUPR, and how organizers operate Verified is covered in Using DUPR for Tournaments/Clubs (for Organizers).
Summary
- Sandbagging = unfairly winning in lower classes by pretending to be weaker. It undermines fairness.
- DUPR is based on actual match results, so you can't lower your rating just by claiming to be weak.
- It structurally prevents sandbagging by restricting entry brackets with DUPR ratings and determining eligibility by numbers.
- DUPR Verified further tightens this with identity verification and integrity checks. Verified matches also carry more weight.
- Over 300 organizations and major leagues are expanding adoption towards 2026.
A fair playing field is the foundation of competitive enjoyment. DUPR Verified is working to establish this on a global scale. For how it's used in the professional world, see MLP and DUPR. Feel free to ask any questions via LINE.
