DUPR vs. UTR-P, UTPR, WPR: A Thorough Comparison of Tournament and Global Rating Systems

"I see not only DUPR but also names like UTR-P and WPR. What's the difference?"—There are actually several types of pickleball ratings. Let's organize this often confusing topic.

I'm Coach Yoshi. I've played tennis for 15 years and discovered pickleball in 2026. Having multiple ratings can be really confusing at first, and I was certainly confused myself. In this article, we'll compare the main ratings and help you figure out "which one you should look at." For the difference from self-rating, please see DUPR vs. Self-Rating.

Note: The adoption status of each rating is a rapidly changing field. This article is based on information at the time of writing. Please check the official information of each organization for the latest updates.

Why are there multiple ratings?

The reason is simple: the organizations that run them, the calculation methods, and the matches they cover are all different. Each measures something slightly "different," so it's normal for one person to have multiple ratings simultaneously and for the numbers to conflict.

Therefore, instead of asking "which one is correct," I believe it's important to understand "what each one measures." Here are the 4 main ones.

Features of Each

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating)

This is the global standard explained in this series, calculated using a modified Elo system based on actual match results (What is DUPR?). It broadly covers matches worldwide, from recreational to professional. It's used in professional circuits like PPA and MLP, and by clubs around the world. Furthermore, at the end of 2025, USA Pickleball adopted DUPR as the official rating for the tournaments it hosts. It's the most widely used metric. UTR-P (UTR Pickleball Rating)

This is the pickleball version developed by UTR Sports, famous for its tennis ratings. It uses a scale of approximately 1-10, and uniquely handles self-reported and sanctioned results separately. In 2024, USA Pickleball temporarily adopted it in place of the old UTPR, but at the end of 2025, USA Pickleball switched the official rating for the tournaments it hosts to DUPR. Currently, UTR-P is positioned as one option usable in USAP-sanctioned tournaments.

UTPR (USA Pickleball Tournament Player Rating)

Introduced in 2019, this is a USA Pickleball sanctioned tournament-based rating. It was long the standard for US tournaments, but in recent years, the transition to UTR-P has progressed, and its use is in decline.

WPR (World Pickleball Ratings)

This is a rating run by PickleballTournaments.com, based on Glicko-2, an improved version of a chess-style rating system. It is calculated from the results of tournaments held since June 2020 that were run on the site (both sanctioned and unsanctioned), and has been used for tournaments whose registration opened in January 2022 or later.

Note that the new world rankings the PPA Tour announced in August 2026, "World Pickleball Rankings," are also abbreviated "WPR." They are a professional standings table in which players accumulate points from tournament results, and are a different thing from the rating introduced here (for details, see the August 2026 international pickleball news roundup).

💡 Coach Yoshi's Tip The key point is that "different scales mean different meanings for the same number." For example, a UTR-P "4.0" and a UTPR "4.0" are different things (some say UTR-P 4.0 is equivalent to UTPR 3.0). When comparing numbers, always check which rating system the number belongs to.

Which one should I look at?

If you're unsure, it's currently best to use DUPR as your standard.

• Most widely used globally (convenient for matching similar skill levels and tournament entry)
• Also gaining traction in Japan (Using DUPR in Japan)
• Broad scope, from recreational to professional players

WPR for results on the US tournament site (PickleballTournaments.com), and UTR-P as well in the context of sanctioned tournaments: I think experienced players use them differently depending on the purpose. Also, USA Pickleball switched the official rating for the tournaments it hosts to DUPR at the end of 2025, so DUPR keeps growing in importance. For everyday play and domestic use, checking DUPR should be sufficient for now.
