Using DUPR in Japan | A coach explains domestic tournaments, compatible events, and how to use it
“DUPR is only for overseas,” you might be thinking. But actually, it’s gradually gaining traction in Japan, especially around tournaments and events. If you plan to play seriously in Japan, it’s worth knowing about.
I’m Yoshi Coach. I played tennis for 15 years and discovered pickleball in 2026. Pickleball in Japan is currently growing rapidly. DUPR, a standard overseas, is also gradually making its way into the domestic scene. In this article, I’ll explain how to use and leverage DUPR in Japan. For the basics of DUPR, please see What is DUPR?
Reasons why DUPR is spreading in Japan
The pickleball population in Japan is rapidly increasing, and the number of tournaments and events is also growing (Latest Pickleball Situation in Japan). As more players join, a common problem arises: "Player skill levels vary too much for competitive matches."
This is where DUPR comes in handy.
- You can team up or play against opponents of the same skill level.
- It allows for fair participation brackets in tournaments.
- It is universally accepted for international tournaments and overseas play.
Because it’s a global "standard," it’s particularly useful in Japan, where the number of players is expanding.
💡 Yoshi Coach's Tip You might think, "If it's only in Japan, couldn't we just self-report?" However, DUPR is free to register, and it's an "asset" that becomes more valuable the longer you use it. Having it early makes tournament participation and finding playing partners much easier.
How to start and use DUPR in Japan

The process is the same whether you're in Japan or overseas.
- Register for the free app (possible from Japan. For instructions, see How to Get Started with DUPR)
- Record your match results (either by yourself or by the event organizer/club)
- Once you have a rating, use it to find opponents of similar skill levels and enter tournaments.
More and more events are now advertised as "DUPR-compatible," and some organizers are starting to register results with DUPR. Before signing up for an event, check if it's "DUPR-compatible."
Scenarios where DUPR is useful (domestic)
- Tournament Entry: Participate in tournaments with class divisions like "DUPR ○.○〜○.○" using your own rating.
- Finding Partners of Similar Skill Levels: Match with players whose ratings are close to yours for intense matches.
- Tracking Progress: "Visualize" the results of your practice and matches with numbers to stay motivated.
- Overseas/International Tournaments: Your rating is directly applicable as a global standard.
For information on how to find trial sessions and classes, also refer to How to Find and Etiquette for Trial Sessions and Beginner Classes. It's recommended to start with casual events and then step up to DUPR-compatible tournaments once you're comfortable.
For Organizers and Club Operators
An increasing number of organizers are interested in using DUPR for their clubs and tournaments. It's possible to create a digital club on DUPR and manage it by recording members' match results. Specific instructions for organizers are summarized in Using DUPR for Tournaments/Clubs (for Organizers).
