"Is pickleball popular in Japan too?" — The answer is undoubtedly yes. And its growth is just getting started.

I'm Coach Yoshi. I've been playing tennis for 15 years, but I discovered pickleball in 2026. I fell in love with the sport so much that I became a coach right away. This American-born sport is known as "America's fastest-growing sport," and it has rapidly expanded in Japan over the past few years. In this article, based on the latest data on player population and普及, I'll organize the current state and "future" of pickleball in Japan from a coach's perspective.

Player Population Soars to Approximately 330,000

According to a market survey published by Pickleball One in 2026, the estimated pickleball player population in Japan is approximately 330,000. What's remarkable is the growth rate: the previous year it was about 45,000. In just one year, it has rapidly expanded to approximately 330,000, nearly a sevenfold increase.

And even larger is the number of people who "might start playing." The same survey estimated that the number of interested potential players is about 11.89 million — about 36 times the current player population.

What's interesting in the same survey is that while pickleball's recognition rate is still low at 13.1%, interest among those who know about it is high. "Many people don't know about it yet, but those who do want to try it" — this state of low recognition × high interest is a sign that its popularity is about to surge.
