"I want to start playing pickleball, but where can I play in Tokyo?" – This is a frequently asked question. The bottom line is, Tokyo is a city where the number of places to play is rapidly increasing.

I'm Coach Yoshi. I played tennis for 15 years and became a pickleball coach after discovering it in 2026. New dedicated courts are opening one after another, and public facilities are offering open play sessions and introductory workshops in various locations. In this article, I will gently explain the four types of places where you can play in Tokyo, and how to reliably find "places that are currently open."

There are 4 types of places to play in Tokyo

Places where you can play pickleball in Tokyo can be broadly divided into four types:

Dedicated Indoor Courts: Indoor facilities built specifically for pickleball. They offer court rentals, lessons, and introductory workshops, making them the most recommended option for beginners. New courts are continually opening in Tokyo.
Open Play Sessions/Classes at Public Gyms and Sports Centers: "Pickleball open days" and "beginner classes" are increasing at ward and city facilities. The fees are affordable, making it easy to start playing in your local community.

Dedicated courts are rapidly increasing in Tokyo

Over the past one to two years, unique dedicated pickleball facilities have increased in Tokyo. For example, there are courts in the special location of Tokyo Tower's rooftop (Minato Ward), a club claiming to be the largest dedicated pickleball facility in Tokyo (Katsushika Ward), and facilities in the Koto Ward area like Toyocho and Ariake. A large facility with indoor and outdoor courts is also scheduled to open in the Ikebukuro area in 2026.

However, facility schedules, fees, and reservation statuses can change quickly. Always check the official website or social media for the latest information before visiting any facility you are interested in.

3 Steps to Find "Currently Open Sessions" in Tokyo

More important than the location itself is the skill of finding "sessions currently open near you." You can almost certainly find one using these three steps:

Search on pickleball-specific event search sites: You can filter events and introductory workshops by region and date (Pickleball One's Tokyo Event List or Tennis Bear's Event Information, etc.).
Search through governing bodies and social media: Information from Pickleball Japan, a unified domestic organization established in April 2026, or searching on Instagram and X with "pickleball Tokyo" or "area name + pickleball" will help you find announcements for clubs and introductory workshops.
Search directly on the facility's reservation page: If you know which dedicated court you want to go to, checking the availability and introductory workshop dates on that facility's reservation site is the quickest way.
