Where Can You Play? The Complete Guide to Finding and Booking Pickleball Courts in Japan

"I'd love to try pickleball, but there doesn't seem to be a court near me…"——I know that feeling well. In reality, though, it's almost always the case that it isn't that there are no courts, it's just that you don't know how to look yet.

Hi, I'm Coach Yoshi. I played tennis for 15 years and discovered pickleball in 2026, becoming a coach. In this article I've pulled together everything about finding places to play pickleball in Japan, from search sites all the way to making a court yourself. Read this and I'm confident you'll find somewhere to play in your own town.

First things first: pickleball needs very little space

A pickleball court is about a quarter the size of a tennis court. It's roughly the same footprint as a badminton court. That means you can play without a dedicated court by using a gym or a tennis court——and that fact is what widens your search enormously. Method 1 | Search court-finder sites and apps (start here)

The fastest route is a dedicated search service. You can look for courts and events by area and date.

• PickleballBear: the pickleball edition of TennisBear. Courts, bookings, events, and tournament information gathered by prefecture
• PICKLEBALL ONE: lists court facilities across Japan
• Pickleheads: an overseas service that lets you find courts worldwide on a map. More and more Japanese courts are being registered on it

Start by searching these three for "your city or ward + pickleball."

Method 2 | Search the governing body and social media

• Governing body information: check official outreach and facility information from sources such as PICKLEBALL JAPAN
• Social media search: searching Instagram or X for "pickleball + area name" turns up the latest announcements from circles and facilities. Social media is often the fastest source for freshly announced sessions

Method 3 | Make use of municipal and public gyms

One option that surprisingly often gets overlooked is the gym run by your own local government.

• Search your city or ward gym's website for "ピックルボール" (pickleball), "多目的開放" (multipurpose open sessions), and "個人開放" (individual open sessions)
• "Pickleball open days" and "beginner classes" are sometimes announced in the municipal newsletter or on the facility's website
• If the gym has badminton courts, you can sometimes use those existing lines to play

Method 4 | Use tennis courts and tennis schools

Tennis facilities across the country are increasingly adding pickleball.

• A growing number of schools draw pickleball lines on a single tennis court and run sessions there
• If you have a tennis school you go to regularly, it's worth asking, "Do you do pickleball here?"
• If you have a tennis background, being able to start at a facility you already know is a big advantage

Method 5 | If you can't find one, make your own

If there's still nothing nearby, you can always create a place yourself.

• A portable net you can carry: set it up in a gym or a multipurpose space in a park and you can start playing right away
• Line tape or chalk: where you have permission to use the surface, mark out simple lines for an instant court
• Rent a tennis court: booking one tennis court with friends and using it for pickleball is a classic move

💡 Coach Yoshi's tip If you have a few friends, one portable net opens up a whole new world. An empty space in a park or gym becomes your court from that day on. Just be sure to check the facility's rules before you use it.

Booking tips | Lock it in before it fills up

The better the session and the better the court, the faster it fills. Keep these three points in mind and you'll get in.

• Book the moment you find it: intro clinics and popular courts have limited capacity and can sell out in a few days
• Weekday mornings are the hidden gem: weekend evenings get crowded, so shifting your timing makes booking much easier
• Watch for cancellations: spots often open up at the last minute, so even if it says full, keep checking back
