What Kind of Brand Is Selkirk? The Strengths and Weak Spots of North America's No.1

"Which brand actually makes the best-selling paddle in America?"——one answer to that question is today's subject, Selkirk.

I'm Coach Yoshi. I played tennis for 15 years, and since finding pickleball in 2026 I've looked at a lot of brands. Selkirk is the "king" of the category, running at the top of the North American market. But hit with enough paddles and you find that even a brand this strong has some surprising blind spots. Today I'll give you my own flat, honest read on why they're strong, and the weak spots that genuinely bother me.

Selkirk Is a "Family Business Out of Idaho"

Selkirk is a pickleball-only brand founded in 2014 in Idaho, USA, by the Barnes family. Two brothers who discovered pickleball at their local community center started the company with their father's help——that family story is where the brand begins. The name comes from the Selkirk Mountains, which look down on their home base.

Here's the interesting part: the "Sport" in the company name is singular. It's a statement: "we pour everything into pickleball, and nothing else." That single-minded focus is what led to their rapid growth later on.

Where They Stand: The Champion With the No.1 Share in North America

Selkirk's position today is simple. They hold the top share of the North American market. An analysis by the market research firm Global Market Insights puts them at the top of the 2025 North American pickleball equipment market with a share above 11% (Market Leader), and Selkirk themselves make the claim of being the number one brand in pickleball. They have more than 200 employees and have publicly stated that sales have grown roughly 19-fold compared with 2019, so both the momentum and the scale are real.

In early 2026 they raised roughly 4.5 billion yen (about $30M) from an investment fund, taking their valuation to around 30 billion yen (about $200M), and they're laying the groundwork for international expansion. I've set out where they sit in the overall standings in the [2025 Edition] Pickleball Major Brand Ranking.

Their rival is JOOLA, the brand with Ben Johns on its roster. Broadly speaking, the accepted division of labor is "Selkirk for control and a soft touch, JOOLA for power and attacking play".

What They Care About: R&D, "Made in USA," and Generous Warranty Coverage

Selkirk's strength is a grounded quality of construction.

  • They run a large in-house research and development lab, cycling through prototypes fast to sharpen their technology. Thick honeycomb cores (X5/X7), the control-oriented Luxx, and Power Air, which opens an air channel through the throat—they have proprietary tech in abundance.
  • The flagship models are Made in USA. Manufacturing and assembly happen at their Idaho factory, keeping quality control entirely in-country.
  • And here's the one that quietly matters: the "limited lifetime warranty" on the flagship paddles. Their customer support is well regarded too, and that trust—"I can use this for years without worry"—is exactly why they're the champion.

💡 Coach Yoshi's tip One thing to get right. "Selkirk = all made in America" isn't true. The flagship Selkirk and LABS lines are made in the US, but SLK, the entry-level sub-brand, is made in China (design and quality control stay in the US). This one gets misunderstood a lot, so remember that the country of manufacture changes depending on the line. I've written in detail about what country of manufacture actually means in Made in USA vs. Made in China Paddles.

Who Is It For?

These are the people I find myself recommending Selkirk to. First, the type who puts quality and warranty coverage first. A lifetime warranty and thorough support are things you appreciate more the longer you keep a paddle. If Made in USA and domestically built premium gear mean something to you, the flagship lines will land, and if you're an intermediate-to-advanced player who wants a soft touch and patient control, the Luxx line will feel right. Even if you're just starting out, SLK gives you a way in if you'd rather begin with an affordable line from a brand you can trust. In a word, this brand fits the steady type best: the person who wants one paddle they can rely on for years, with no mistakes.

The Honest Weak Spots: The Troubles That Come With Being the Champion

Now for the main event. Even the champion has clear weak spots.

  • The prices are high: the flagships sit in the premium bracket. The warranty and the support do make that easier to swallow, but set against newer brands offering the same performance for less, they can come off badly on value.
  • There are so many models it gets confusing: this is the famous one. The lineup is among the largest in the industry (at the time of writing, JOOLA's lineup is far larger), and you constantly hear "I have no idea which one to pick" (choice paralysis). Selkirk themselves acknowledged it, going as far as a "reset" that heavily reorganized the entry-level lines in 2026.
  • A sense that they lost the lead role in the competitive scene: Tyson McGuffin, the face of the brand for years, moved to JOOLA in 2024. The read that JOOLA has taken the initiative in the power category and in star players has stuck.
  • Power Air divides opinion: because of that distinctive edgeless design, some players say "the rim scuffs easily" and "the touch is hard to get a feel for, so soft shots produce more errors." It's a sharply pointed model aimed at advanced players.
  • Durability on some models: with foam and thick-core builds, there are occasional reports of the interior breaking down and of dead spots (opinion is split here, and plenty of people say theirs lasted a long time).

💡 Coach Yoshi's tip Selkirk is the royal road you can't go wrong with, and at the same time a brand with so many options that you end up lost. Decide just one thing first—whether you lean control or lean power—and then open the catalog, and you can narrow it down in one go. I've explained the difference between power and control in Control-focused vs. Power-focused.

Availability in Japan

Selkirk has started to turn up at several specialty stores in Japan. It's a popular overseas brand, so I think it will only get easier to find from here.

And——we at Pickleball Lab have started carrying Selkirk as an authorized distributor in Japan. You can pick out genuine products from the Selkirk paddle lineup. I've also gathered the brand's origins and its engineering philosophy on the Selkirk brand page, so take a look at that too.

One more thing that's specific to our store. That popular model carrying their signature technology, the VANGUARD Power Air, has actually been discontinued for distribution in Asia (it's basically a US-only model), which makes it hard to obtain through official channels. Even so, it's said to be one of Selkirk's best-selling models ever, and it has a devoted following. So we bring this Power Air in through an official route, shipped directly from the manufacturer's warehouse in the US (VANGUARD Power Air S2). If you've been thinking "that model with the air channel, nobody has it anywhere...," take a look.

One word of caution. This goes for overseas brands in general, but parallel imports may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty (the lifetime warranty). One of Selkirk's great attractions is that warranty, so if you want to make use of it, the smart choice is to buy through a route where the warranty actually applies.

Summary: My Own Conclusion

Selkirk is a brand that can build the kind of paddle you can't go wrong with, living up to its North America No.1 banner. The R&D and the warranty are beyond reproach. But behind that reassurance sit two open questions—the high prices, and so many models that you end up lost—and in 2024 they had McGuffin, the face of the brand for years, poached by JOOLA. Not a flawless champion, if I'm being honest.

So when you choose, don't go by "it's popular." Decide first whether you lean control or lean power, and only then open the catalog. That alone narrows that enormous lineup down in one go.
